Austin Cafra Austin Architects collaborated with GHD Woodhead and the Department of Education and Training on the design for a new building at the Waratah Special Development School. Drawing on Rich Austin’s extensive experience in design for special needs, and direct input from educators, the project includes a new Learning Neighbourhood for senior students, a Community Hub for flexible use, and various landscape enhancements, all designed to support the school's diverse needs and advance student well-being.

Rich Austin brings over 12 years of experience in special needs design, having worked at a senior level on notable projects such as the Northern School for Autism, Eastern Ranges School, Merri River School, Southern Autistic School, Croxton School, Warringa Park School, and Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School. His expertise ensures that the design process places the student at the centre, creating environments where they can have agency in their learning in comfortable and flexible spaces.
